Start with a 24-hour operating map instead of asking for one preferred start time. Mark check-out, housekeeping movement, room-ready goals, check-in, breakfast, banquet breaks, restaurant peaks, bar close, overnight audit, employee shift changes, laundry or waste pickup, food and beverage deliveries, shuttle runs, and scheduled vendor access. Add events that change those patterns, including conferences, weddings, team arrivals, group departures, and loading at nearby venues. The resulting map often shows that one elevation can be quiet while another is at its busiest.
Occupancy percentage alone is not enough. A nearly full airport hotel may have staggered guest movement, while a lower-occupancy convention property can produce a concentrated surge when one session ends. A limited-service hotel with one front door has less routing flexibility than a full-service property with multiple public entrances. Extended-stay guests may use parking, pet areas, and side doors throughout the day. The planning call should include front office, engineering, security, housekeeping, food and beverage, events, and valet or parking representatives as the property requires.
Separate Guest Paths From Water, Hoses, and Overhead Work
Every proposed zone should have a guest-routing sketch. Identify the primary entrance, an agreed alternate entrance, accessible routes, curb ramps, elevators reached from each door, parking payment points, smoking areas, pet relief areas, pool gates, restaurant patios, and paths to meeting rooms. The hotel should decide which route remains open and how guests will be directed before barriers appear. A wet sidewalk or hose crossing that seems minor to the crew can be a serious obstacle for a guest using mobility equipment, carrying luggage, traveling with children, or unfamiliar with the property.
The work boundary must also consider upper-floor exposure. Guests may open balcony doors, stand on balconies, use terraces, or approach windows without knowing exterior work is underway. Air intakes, operable windows, louvers, and exhaust points should be identified with engineering staff. Room blocks adjacent to a work elevation may require notices or temporary operational controls chosen by the hotel. Cleaning personnel should not make promises about indoor air, leakage, or envelope performance; suspected openings or water entry concerns belong with the property's qualified building professionals.
Hoses and recovery equipment need routes that do not drift as production advances. Protected crossings, ramps designed for the expected traffic, staffed transitions, and secure connections may be appropriate. Barriers should withstand the actual site conditions without blocking emergency access or creating a new trip or visibility problem. At each shift change, the contractor and hotel representative should walk the route together because valet stands, luggage carts, deliveries, or temporary event signs may have changed the original plan.

Treat Entrances and Canopies as Their Own Projects
The porte-cochere is often the least flexible zone on a hotel property. It combines arriving guests, luggage, valet staff, rideshare vehicles, shuttles, taxis, package delivery, overhead finishes, lights, signs, cameras, sprinklers, speakers, and drainage. A drone may be unsuitable under a canopy, and broad overhead rinsing may be incompatible with continuous access. The plan can divide canopy tops, fascia, columns, soffits, and adjacent glass into separate methods and work periods rather than forcing them into the upper-facade schedule.
Canopy tops collect leaf matter, bird residue, rooftop runoff, dust, and debris that can release suddenly when wetted. Before washing, determine whether dry removal or contact access is needed and where water will leave the structure. Scuppers may discharge directly into a drive lane or planting area. Seams, penetrations, lighting, and signs may have conditions that cleaning personnel cannot evaluate from below. If there is concern about loose material, leakage, corrosion, electrical exposure, or structural condition, the hotel should obtain appropriate inspection or repair before cleaning proceeds.
Detailed entrance glass is usually contact work. Rinsing can remove loose soil but does not provide controlled agitation, edge detailing, or a spot-free finish. Fingerprints, grease, adhesive, mineral scale, silicone, and construction residue require assessment beyond a facade rinse. The work order should say whether door glass, sidelites, revolving doors, canopy glazing, and upper curtain wall receive a rinse, contact cleaning, specialty restoration, or no work. That distinction prevents a general exterior wash from being judged against an unstated glass-detailing standard.
Set a Heat and Storm Decision Matrix
Houston's 1991-2020 climate normals at IAH show average summer highs above 92 degrees from June through August and annual precipitation of 51.84 inches. Averages do not forecast a service day, but they support planning for heat, rain, and changing surface conditions. Direct sun can raise facade temperatures beyond the reported air temperature, accelerate drying, alter dwell, and create uneven results. Worker heat protections and rest practices are an employer responsibility that should be incorporated into production planning rather than treated as an afterthought when the schedule slips.
The weather matrix should list conditions that allow normal work, conditions that require a smaller zone or different elevation, and conditions that stop setup or application. Inputs can include measured wind at the work area, gust behavior around corners, lightning and thunderstorm proximity, active rain, forecast timing, surface temperature, standing water, saturated recovery capacity, and the ability to control mist. The aircraft manufacturer's limits are only one input. A tether, hose, chemical application, nearby guests, and valet traffic may require a more conservative operational boundary.
Thunderstorm recovery belongs in the same matrix. After rain or an outflow boundary, the crew should verify barriers, hose routes, drain covers, wet floors, roof and canopy discharge, wind direction, and collection capacity. The hotel representative should confirm that delayed guest or vehicle traffic has not created a new conflict. Restarting because the rain stopped is insufficient if the property and controls no longer match the approved zone plan. Weather downtime and a return process should be addressed in advance without promising a guaranteed completion hour.

Trace Runoff From Roofline to Final Control
Hotel exteriors contain many intermediate water paths. Solution applied high on a wall can land on a setback roof, collect behind a parapet, cross a guest-room ledge, wash debris onto a canopy, or reach grade far from the point directly below. The drainage walk should follow each elevation through roofs, scuppers, downspouts, trench drains, curb inlets, landscaped areas, garage ramps, pool decks, and adjacent property. Facility drawings and engineering staff can help identify connections, but uncertain drains should be treated conservatively until their destination is understood.
Houston's storm-water ordinance generally prohibits discharges not composed entirely of storm water into the municipal separate storm sewer system, subject to its detailed provisions. A hotel cleaning plan should therefore identify likely constituents, products, soil, volume, collection controls, and a proposed disposition route instead of assuming rinse water can enter a curb inlet. TCEQ wastewater and storm-water resources can inform the discussion, while Houston Public Works, the serving utility, or an environmental professional may provide site-specific direction. Rain can undermine a well-designed control train. Roof discharge may add volume, a drain cover may bypass, a berm may redirect water toward the guest entrance, or a recovery unit may lose capacity. The work-window matrix should connect runoff limits to weather limits. Before removing controls, the crew should check for pooled water, residue, slippery surfaces, displaced debris, and any path that guests or vehicles will use. The hotel should receive a factual record of controls and exceptions, not a broad environmental claim unsupported by the site conditions.

Integrate Flight Planning Without Making the Drone the Schedule
Drone-assisted cleaning can be useful on selected hotel elevations with clear stand-off space, controlled ground areas, and a compatible surface task. It can also be limited by balconies, signs, trees, neighboring towers, utility lines, recessed courtyards, rooftop equipment, wind acceleration, moving vehicles, and people below. Houston properties near controlled airspace or heliports require careful airspace review. The proposed work window must satisfy both the hotel circulation plan and the applicable aviation requirements; neither one overrides the other.
FAA commercial-operator guidance addresses Part 107 responsibilities, and its operations-over-people information explains the conditions for eligible operations over people or moving vehicles. The pilot should evaluate airspace authorization, visual line of sight, Remote ID applicability, aircraft and equipment status, weather, launch and recovery, emergency procedures, and the specific operating category or waiver needs. Hotel permission to use a parking area does not authorize a flight that otherwise falls outside applicable rules.
The schedule needs a non-drone branch. If wind increases, guests enter a protected zone, a shuttle cannot be rerouted, or an elevation proves unsuitable, the team should know whether to move to a ground-access task, use another approved method, postpone that zone, or exclude it. A drone cannot perform contact glass detailing, hand agitation, scraping, repair, restoration, or a professional facade inspection. Keeping those limits visible in the schedule helps the hotel understand what will and will not be finished during each window.
